Midwife and Vyva Melinkolya, the projects of Madeline Johnston and Angel Diaz respectively, have released the third single, 'Plague X', from their upcoming collaborative record Orbweaving. Written during a residency in the desert, the artists have a clear synergy. Separately, they make music that conjures distinctive atmospheres that they describe as 'heaven metal' and 'aggressively ethereal', making a kind of ambient shoegaze with its roots in noise music that exists in the same lineage as artists like Grouper. 'Plague X' is made of layers of textured noise, undercut by fuzzing guitars and distant drums with affected vocals and half-buried melodies. The track comes with a video made up of footage from their time recording the record in 2021, Johnston describes the footage here, "At night we went herping, or looking for reptiles (rattlesnakes) and wildlife, along the deserted roads near Las Cruces. A lot of the concepts interwoven into Orbweaving were informed by our residency spent in Southern New Mexico. The video is a document of this deeply meaningful and special time."
